Tata Safari & Harrier Petrol Launch

Tata Motors is gearing up for a big festive season launch in November 2025 with the introduction of its brand-new 1.5L turbo GDI petrol engine for the Harrier and Safari SUVs. This marks a major shift in Tata’s midsize SUV strategy, as both models are currently available only with the 2.0L turbo diesel engine sourced from FCA.

The new petrol powertrain has been long-awaited and is expected to make Tata’s popular SUVs more competitive against rivals offering petrol, CNG, and hybrid options.

Why This Petrol Engine Matters

  • Expands Tata’s lineup: Harrier (2019) and Safari (2021) have so far relied only on a diesel engine.

  • Competitive edge: Rivals like Hyundai, MG, and Toyota already offer petrol, CNG, and hybrid midsize SUVs.

  • Lower entry prices: Petrol variants are expected to be more affordable than diesel-only models.

  • Future-ready tech: The same engine will also be used in the upcoming Tata Sierra, which is set to debut as an EV in early 2026.

Tata’s Engine Strategy Going Forward

Tata recently secured full rights from FCA to upgrade the 2.0L Multijet diesel engine currently powering the Harrier and Safari. This gives the company greater autonomy over calibration, development, and cost control.

The diesel engine will continue production at the Ranjangaon facility, but the introduction of the new petrol engine will ensure Tata can tap into the rising demand for petrol-powered midsize SUVs in India.

Expert Insight

“Petrol demand in the SUV segment has been on the rise, and Tata’s 1.5L turbo petrol is perfectly timed to capture that momentum. By offering both petrol and diesel choices, Tata can strengthen its position in the ₹15–25 lakh SUV category,” said an industry analyst.
